Supermarkets boycott Taiwanese polluter’s products

The Saigon Co.op supermarket system has not sold products from seasoning powder producer Vedan Vietnam since August 5. Some Big C supermarkets in the north and central region have done the same.

Vedan Vietnam was caught discharging waste water into the Thi Vai River in September 2008. The firm has poisoned the river for 14 years. It has not compensated the farmers who live along the Thi Vai River yet.

“As of today (August 5), Co.op Mart system will no longer sell the Vedan brand seasoning powder and spice powder. Saigon Co.op has also asked Vedan to remove their products until they completely deal with the incident and compensate farmers,” said a representative of Saigon Co.op.

Duong Thi Thuy Trang, PR Manager of Big C, said that some Big C supermarkets in the north and the central region no longer sell Vedan products.

Citimart doesn’t boycott Vedan seasoning powder but a Citimart official said that Vedan products are selling very slowly. “According to our regulations, we will ask providers to take back their products if they are not sold well within 3-6 months,” said Citimart Director Ngo Van Hai.
