Nam Dinh cleaning up craft village pollution

Due to their low level of technology, the craft villages discharge into the environment untreated hazardous waste, such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon dioxide (CO2), dust, and volatile chemicals, such as hydrogen chloride (HCl), aldehyde and acetone. In addition, solid and hazardous wastes are not treated properly.

In recent years, Nam Dinh has devoted resources to improve the craft village environment. Vu Huu Tu, deputy director of the Nam Dinh Province Department of Industry and Trade, said the department has proposed the development of industrial zones for small to medium-sized enterprises in the province to accommodate the production facilities of craft villages.

The province has already planned or constructed industrial zones with infrastructure for the Tong Xa, Van Chang, Xuan Tien and Dong Coi craft villages, and has built wastewater treatment systems for Xuan Tien and Tong Xa industrial zones. It is also supporting the construction of dumping sites in 12 communes and towns that are home to craft villages.

Most enterprises in craft villages run production by themselves, without state management, making environmental protection enforcement difficult.

Tu said improving the communities’ awareness of the importance of environmental protection is crucial to ease environmental pollution in craft villages.

Nguyen Van Khanh, president of the Y Yen District Metallurgy Association, said the role and responsibilities of local authorities in dealing with polluters in craft villages and industrial zones must be promoted, as well as the communities’ awareness of environmental protection.

Vu Huu Tu, deputy director of the Nam Dinh Province Department of Industry and Trade, said implementation of environmental protection laws must be combined with craft villages’ conventions and regulations to increase the efficiency of state management of those villages.
