Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation on low-carbon growth between Vietnam and Japan is aimed to strengthen capacity in implementing activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reverse the climate crisis.

(Photo: MONRE) On the afternoon of October 14, on behalf of the Government Vietnam, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha and Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Yamada Takio on behalf of the Japanese Government signed the MoU on low-carbon growth cooperation between the two Governments for the period 2021-2030.
Before signing the above MoU, Minister Tran Hong Ha had a bilateral exchange via the virtual form with Minister Yamaguchi Tsuyoshi.
At the meeting, the two sides discussed the implementation of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) in the coming time; using the overall assessment model of climate change as the basis for building a long-term strategy on GHG emission reduction and carbon neutrality; preparing for the 7th Vietnam-Japan Environmental Policy Dialogue and Vietnam-Japan Environment Week in December 2021.
Sharing about the implementation of the JCM mechanism, Minister Tran Hong Ha said that in the period of 2013-2020, the implementation of JCM has brought about many great results, creating a new investment channel for development activities of greenhouse gas emissions mitigation in Vietnam.
Through the JCM mechanism, businesses can access and apply advanced Japanese low-carbon technologies, products, systems and services and are supported to strengthen their capacity in implementing activities greenhouse gas emissions mitigation .
In particular, in the context that the world is moving towards COP26 with new and stronger commitments to reverse the current climate crisis, according to Minister Tran Hong Ha, the signing of the agreement between Vietnam and Japan to implement the JCM mechanism until the end of 2030 is very important.
Regarding the long-term and carbon-neutral strategy, Minister Tran Hong Ha would like to thank the Japanese Ministry of Environment for supporting the calculation of peak emissions as the basis for Vietnam to develop the National Strategy on Climate Change in the second phase from now to 2050, with the participation of leading research institutes and experts.
