National conference on development of small and medium hydropower and renewable energy
The Party and the Government have set out the goal of having 265 billion kWh electricity by 2020, 570 billion kWh electricity by 2030. Currently, we have over 170 billion kWh of electricity. However, at present, fossil fuels such as coal, gas, and so on are exhausted. In order to balance this goal, from now to 2020, it is essential to find electricity resources to supplement 100 billion kWh of electricity by 2020 and 300 billion kWh by 2030.
This is an important conference that discusses the development of the remaining small and medium hydropower projects, the potential, the development of renewable energy, including wind power, solar power, biomass power, etc. in each province, city and region in the country from now to 2030 with the vision to 2050.
The issue here is to calculate the potential of domestic energy sources which can be exploited. The source of electricity from domestic resources needs to be exploited, namely small and medium hydropower sources, especially renewable energy sources, such as wind power, solar power, biomass power.
On hydropower, the total current capacity is about 17,000 MW, generating about 70 billion kWh per year. Of which, over 300 small and medium hydropower projects have been built with the capacity of 70 billion kWh connecting the national power grid. In general, these hydropower projects have been put into stable operation. Most of the projects do not affect the resettlement and life of people in the upstream and downstream.
As for renewable energy, according to national and international experts at the conference, the potential of renewable energy forms in our country is considered as rich. The development of renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and biomass needs to be further strengthened in order to reach the goal of the 2020 strategy: 11.700 billion kWh and 2030: 88.400 billion kWh, much higher than the revised Electricity Planning VII in 2020: 5.830 billion kWh and 2030: 43.532 billion kWh.
According to Tran Viet Ngai, Chairman of the Vietnam Energy Association, both in the world and in Vietnam, renewable energy should focus on wind, solar and biomass. These are three types with great potential.
In 2015, the Government issued a Renewable Energy Development Strategy but so far the capacity for renewable energy production has reached about 100 MW of wind power, 15 MW of solar power, 10 MW of biomass. It can be said that these numbers are extremely small compared to its endless potential. This energy source is a clean energy source that does not pollute the environment. If exploited at high levels, utilizing tens of thousands of MW of solar, wind and biomass energy would be able to secure the power supply for centuries to come and always ensure national energy security.
The conference received enthusiastic participation from national and international delegates and experts from Ministries, Agencies and Departments of Industry and Trade. Opinions at the conference will be synthesized and be the basis for drafting the petition to the Party, State, National Assembly and Government.
