Technology innovation for the Vietnam's mechanical engineering industry

23/11/2016

Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement and Free Trade Agreements between Vietnam and other countries are about effective, which brings Vietnam's mechanical engineering industry both opportunities and challenges. Meanwhile, the Vietnam's mechanical engineering industry is facing a lot of difficulties due to outdated production technologies, lack of policies to support scientific and technological research and lack of technological solutions in designing and manufacturing of mechanical products.

Ms. Dam Thi Hong Lan, Director of Vietbay consulting and trading company said that cooperation with leading corporations such as Honda Vietnam, LG, Samsung SDI, Panasonic, Yamaha Motor Vietnam, Canon Vietnam, Vietnam 1 precision engineering company, etc help Vietnam’s enterprises realize the important role of advanced science and technology, especially software technology for designing, analyzing and processing products. However, most of enterprises lacking information sources on advanced equipment and technologies are not believe in the equipment and technology provided by domestic organizations due to poor quality and after-sales activities.

In order to overcome the difficulties, Mr. Tran Ngoc Ha-General Director of Vietnam engine and agricultural machinery corporation said that, the State Government should promulgate policies on technology transfer, workforce training and financial support to help enterprises access new technologies, actively participate in the global supply chain.

According to some experts, the State Government should promote the implementation of supporting program on product and technology innovation in enterprises. Policy on high technology import should also be considered, ensuring consistence of policies and promoting technological innovation in sectors.

In the context of investment expansion and attraction, Vietnam enterprises should take advantage of new and advanced technologies from other countries through cooperation with foreign partners. In addition, in order to promote the exchange of information on equipment and technologies, policy makers in Vietnam should seek the way to help domestic enterprises cooperate with partners for transfer of appropriate technology.

In recent years, in order to serve the scientific research, the mechanical engineering industry has established a lot of research centers. Through these centers, many works have been applied to gradually replace some of imported products. Production line in the plants has been synchronized. A lot of enterprises have produced most of the trucks, cars, etc. However, besides the results achieved, the industry still has certain limitations.

Decision No.879/QD-TTg on approving the strategy on Vietnam’s industrial development through 2025, with a vision toward 2035 dated June 9, 2014 of the Prime Minister selected the Mechanical engineering and metallurgy industry for development priority. Specifically, from now to 2025, to prioritize the following groups of industries and products: machinery and equipment serving agriculture, automobiles and mechanical spare parts, and steel for manufacture. Beyond 2025, to prioritize the following groups of industries and products: shipbuilding, non-ferrous metals and new materials.
