Nui Beo Coal JSC aims at cleaner production

02/10/2013

The Nui Beo mine is located adjacent to residential areas in Ha Long City; therefore, Nui Beo Coal JSC has invested in systems and technology such as stratified disposal and effective drainage systems. To better serve the environment, the company conducted tree and vetiver grass planting to prevent erosion while creating a clean, green look for the business.

In coal mining, the spread of dust and gases is inevitable, causing pollution and a waste of resources. To reduce dust emissions, the company regularly organizes road dust suppression watering three times a day. Currently, the company has a total of 16 watering vehicles with the cost of irrigation averaging VND1.6 billion annually.

The company invested in dust suppression misting systems in all bunkers, repair workshops, and mining sites. In addition, the company also invested in a dustproof enclosure fence adjoining residential premises at a total investment of VND3.2 billion. In particular, the company uses suspension technology for selecting coal. This method can reduce dust emissions while maximizing coal recovery. Thanks to this method, the company has significantly reduced dust while saving coal, lessening the negative impact on the environment.

To solve the wastewater generated after the production process, the company conducts wastewater treatment with advanced technology and equipment. All wastewater from the mine is collected and treated to ensure hygiene standards and reusability for production while not affecting the environment. In addition, the company has invested hundreds of millions (VND) in hazardous waste and oil-polluted wastewater collection and sewage pretreatment tanks.

The company periodically dredges drainage systems at mining sites and routes for coal transportation. Every year, it collaborates with local authorities in the wards of Ha Trung, Ha Tu, and Ha Phong to organize dredging campaigns to ensure no flooding during the rainy season.

The handling of waste dumps has been implemented via a cooperation program between the company and a German partner since 2008, carried out mainly at the Chinh Bac landfill. Accordingly, the company has built a meteorological observation station at the Chinh Bac landfill and gathered data once a week; piloted tree planting at the landfill, and installed four dust monitoring devices at mining sites. Last year, the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) coordinated the Research Association Mining and Environment (RAME) project conducting renovation and rehabilitation of land after mining. Currently, the RAME project is involved with collecting data from the sites of Nui Beo, Ha Lam, Ha Tu, and Hon Gai.

Consistent with the goal of cleaner production, despite operating in an industry that may cause serious environmental impacts, Nui Beo Coal JSC is vying to achieve production and business efficiency along with improved environmental protection./.
