Tra Vinh Intensifies Cleaner Production
06/09/2011
In the recent years, Tra Vinh Province has seen significant results in applying cleaner production among industrial production facilities. Some businesses are aware of cleaner production importance and have gradually renewed technology, built waste water treatment system, used energy effectively and consumed energies that eliminate small amount of waste, contributing to promoting production, reducing the environmental pollution and improving product quality and competitiveness in the market.
According to a survey in Tra Vinh Province done by the Component of Cleaner Production in Industry (within the 2005-2010 Vietnam-Denmark Development Cooperation Program in Environment under the management of the Ministry of Industry and Trade), at present, there are 16 businesses understanding the benefits of cleaner production, equal to 43 percent of the total number of businesses in the province and 0.6 percent of businesses in the country. Eight businesses have applied cleaner production methods, accounting for 22 percent of businesses in the province. Three of those have saved five percent of energy consumption when producing a product compared to the past.
According to the survey, two food processing businesses have saved three percent of water with two water supply businesses reducing nearly three percent of electricity, water and materials, a plastic and rubber production business 15 percent of electricity, a seafood processing business 7-8 percent of electricity, 8-10 percent of Diesel Oil, 6-7 percent of water and 1-5 percent of materials and a business in the field of coal, electricity and gas 6-7 percent of electricity, nearly three percent of Diesel Oil and three percent of materials.
However, according to Tran Quoc Tuan, the director of the Tra Vinh Province Center for Industry Promotion and Development Consultancy, the province is facing the environmental pollution issues. The number of businesses applying cleaner production remains small. Cleaner production methods have not promoted their efficiency. Therefore, province needs to receive more supports from related departments to apply those methods effectively.
Therefore, since 2010, the Center for Industry Promotion and Development Consultancy has worked with the Component of Cleaner Production in Industry to organize a number of training courses on improving awareness of cleaner production in industry for business managers and technical directors in the province. Those training courses have been positively responded by businesses in the province. Many advanced technologies have been adopted to reduce environmental pollution such as 5S interior management tools (5S are Sifting, Sorting, Sweeping, Standardizing and Sustaining).
Tra Vinh Province has set detailed targets for the 2011-2015 plan on cleaner production in industry. With support from the Component of Cleaner Production in Industry, the Center for Industry Promotion and Development Consultancy and businesses, Tra Vinh will obtain further successes in cleaner production, promoting economic development toward sustainability./.
