Hanoi – Hong Ha Beer Joint Stock Company

Hong Ha Beer Factory was established in 1994. In 2005, the company was privatized and renamed to Hong Ha Beer JSC. (member of Hanoi Alcohol – Beer – Beverage Cooperation and renamed to Hanoi – Hong Ha Beer Cooperation). The company has designed capacity of 10 million liters/year with 130 employees. Main products of the company are drought beer and bottled beer with total production of 6,000,000 litters in 2008.

Main environmental impacts from production activities are from wastewater from equipment cleaning, cooking, fermentation, bottling, disinfecting, bottle cleaning; gas from boiler and fermenting process. With the 300 m3/day waste load, the volume of wastewater collected in sewers is then poured out of the community fish pond behind unpleasant odors Company. Wastewater of the company containing organic matters (COD: 1720 mg/l; BOD: 1481mg/l) is much higher than the regulations (COD: 50 mg/l; BOD: 30 mg/l). This organic matter is the cause leading killed fish, reduced fish productivity of the community, in addition to the odor pollution, the company has received many complaints from people surroundings. To solve these problems, the construction wastewater treatment system is inevitable solution. The company has access to cleaner production in the industrial component of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT).

Under the supporting of MOIT and Vietnam Cleaner Production Centre, the company had implemented CP assessment. During the first phase (from May to October 2007), the company established a CP team led by Mr. Duong Van Hoan –Vice Director of the company and other 7 members to assess the whole production line. After the Cleaner production assessment (CPA) and identification of waste line, the Team has conducted mass and energy balances for the whole production line. All collected data have been used to analyze and identify Cleaner Production options for each production step.

The Company has integrated process management system with the environmental management system, therefore, energy and material consumption is monitored at the same time with the monitoring of pollutant parameters (COD, BOD, SS ...).in the waste streams. A sample system and legal procedures are built and applied for environment data collection, checking, classification and data analysis.

CP not only brings about benefits from energy saving, emission minimization, reduced water consumption, but also helps the Company increase production, improve product quality, and prove prestige. The implemented CP options at the Company are a typical case study for enterprises in the sector of beer production in Vietnam./.
