Nineteen businesses honoured for initiatives against climate change

On June 16th, 2016, The Ministry of Science and Technology which was in collaboration with the World Bank, has organised an awards ceremony to honour 19 Vietnamese enterprises with outstanding startup projects in response to climate change in Hanoi.

The winning enterprises which have had the most outstanding projects in more than 300 initiative projects sent to the contest. The target of the contest was the giving the initiatives and the proving for their own one which was the positive effects of technologies on green growth and building a low-carbon economy in Vietnam. They will be financially supported by the Vietnam Climate Innovation Centre and enjoy its initiative incubation services, aiming to identify their business models and commercialise their products.
Mr. Chu Ngoc Anh, the Ministry of Science and Technology noted that climate change has been attracting increasing attention from the international community. Vietnam is considered as one of the five most vulnerable countries by global climate change. The Vietnamese government has been implementing a number of policies and action programmes over the past years, seeking to strengthen national climate change resilience and adaptation capability, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhance energy use efficiency in industries, he said.
As one of five countries that will be most affected by climate change, Vietnam has received the approval of the international community in the struggle to cope with climate change. The international community already has many practical actions by technical assistance projects, investment projects to strengthen policies and infrastructure to cope with climate change in Vietnam.
According to Mr. Achim Fock, Acting Country Director for the World Bank in Vietnam, Vietnamese businesses are in the most suitable position to provide innovative solutions to climate change. Because above all, Vietnamese government and citizen clearly understand the difficulties, challenges and potentials of their own localities, thereby coming up with relevant initiatives to improve the local economy and create more employment.
The Vietnam Climate Innovation Centre which is under The Ministry of Science and Technology, is a part of the Technology Development Program to Respond to the Climate Change of the World Bank Group with the aim of establishing a network connection of 7 Innovation Application Centres dealing with climate change worldwide.
The Vietnam Climate Innovation Centre is funded by the Australian Government and the Department for International Development (UK) has helped the businesses to raise the capital, capacity building and the provision of financial services, consulting and training for enterprise green technology in 5 key areas: energy efficiency, information technology, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and water resource management.
The award launched last year by the Vietnam Climate Innovation Centre aims to assist 48 local enterprises to grow clean-tech and businesses within its first three years of operations, expanding access to new and improved climate-smart products and services to over 1,700 households.
Ministry of Science and Technology hopes that the award will form the foundation of Vietnam Climate Innovation Centre, which brings the identify of business models, commercialization of products to respond to climate change for enterprises.
