It was the statement made by Gavin Smith - Director of the clean development fund of Dragon Capital at a seminar on the support program on solar power developmentin southern Vietnam recently held by the HCMC Energy Saving Center in coordination with the relevant units.

Accordingly, Solar Hub program funded by the U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office has selected and funded 14 projects under pre-feasibility study with an expectedly total installed capacity of 12.800kWp (equivalent 12,8MW ). According to the experts, this support mechanism is fundamental to promote the development of solar power - which has a lot of potential in southern Vietnam.

Solar power has appeared and developed in Vietnam but only scattering on small scales. Particularly in HCM City, so far there is over 90 solar powerinvestment projects with an installed capacity of more than 1.000kWp connected to power grid with 2,000 VND/kWh of price support. However, according to investors, one of the biggest obstacles in the development of this renewable energy source is no mechanism to support prices like wind power or biomass. So the investors are waiting for the regulations specifying the price of solar power from the projects to the power grid so that they may rest assured to develop clean energy.
