Ho Chi Minh City aims to save energy

State-owned enterprises across Ho Chi Minh City have signed energy saving memoranda of understanding with the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, with the intention to save about 481 million kWh and 5.6 million liters of oil during the 2015-2017 period, equivalent to 2.8 percent of the city’s total energy consumption, saving the city VND807 billion and reducing its CO2 emissions by 285 tonnes.

Diversified energy saving activities
Since 2002 Ho Chi Minh City has provided energy saving support for 588 enterprises in 24 sectors and the supported have annually saved 931.926 MWh and 5.69 million liters of oil, while reducing CO2 emissions by 600,087 tonnes. The city has provided energy saving consultancy for more than 200 buildings and almost all clean water supply plants across it; replaced 90 percent of old power-consuming public lighting bulbs with new hi-performance and power-saving bulbs, annually saving power by 75.62 percent; encouraged the use of gas-fueled taxi cabs, annually saving more than VND6.3 billion compared to the use of gasoline; deployed a power motorbike project, which is estimated to save 90 percent of energy use compared to gasoline-fueled motorbikes. In addition, it has also focused on technology transfers from technology developers from Japan and the Republic of Korea in the fields of solar energy, power and water supply.
Ho Chi Minh City aims to become a city based on green growth, highlighting the efficient use of natural resources and energies. As part of these efforts it has set energy efficient targets for local enterprises, especially state-owned ones, during the 2015-2017 period, including corporations, Co.op Mart, Ho Chi Minh City Export Processing and Industrial Zone Authority (Hepza), departments of health, colleges and schools and public lighting units.
Further promoting energy saving solutions
Assigning energy efficient targets for state-owned enterprises is key to the achievement of green growth, which will promote their development and renovation of new energy efficient technologies while making them more proactive in drafting energy efficiency plans and related implementation processes and solutions. The city will help these enterprises with energy efficient consultancy and related technology transfers and training.
These enterprises expect to receive about 800 energy efficient technologies, solutions and equipment during the 2015-2017 period, with about 290 of which to be transferred this year alone. These energy efficient technologies, solutions and equipment are predicted to save about 481 million kWh and 5.6 million liters of oil, which is equivalent to 2.8 percent of the city’s total energy consumption, saving the city VND807 billion while reducing its CO2 emissions by 285 tonnes.
Key private energy users will be the city’s energy efficient objects for the next period. Concretely, 206 such energy users will apply energy efficient technologies, solutions and equipment to save approximately 18,025 tonnes of oil equivalent, accounting for about three percent of their total energy consumption.
“Energy efficient solutions help save energy but require considerable investment. So, we aim to provide enterprises with energy efficient solutions and partly benefit from their saved energy. This is a new investment model, which save enterprises much money while also allowing them to benefit from energy savings.
