Centre for training on climate change and disaster mitigation makes debut

The Vietnam National Institute of Education Management (NIEM) and the Hanoi-based United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) opened the Centre for Training and Research on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction in Hanoi yesterday.

The establishment of the centre to be run by the NIEM, aims to improve educational management capacity on climate change and disaster risk mitigation.
Speaking at the launch, deputy director of the NIEM, Prof, Dr. Le Phuoc Minh, said that Vietnam is one of the countries vulnerable to natural disasters such as storms, flooding, drought, earthquake, and tsunami, so there should be action strategies for disaster prevention and mitigation on a large scale in general, and for educational sector in particular, to facilitate a timely response to climate change and natural disasters.
Research and training courses on education management of climate change and disaster risk reduction will be held regularly at the centre by the NIEM and its partners, improving awareness on climate change and disaster risk reduction in the national education system.
Earlier, in attempt to implement the National Strategy for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in the 2011-2020 period for the education sector, the NIEM and UNESCO organised two pilot training courses for heads of educational institutions in Hanoi and Hue cities and provided a course on improving educational management capacity for officers from the Ministry of Education and Training, on disaster risk reduction and emergency management.
