TKV announced the overall environmental protection plans in Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Long and Cam Pha in its green growth strategy for the period of 2021-2025.
According to the published content, in the period 2021-2025, Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (TKV) will implement five overall environmental protection plans in two strategic localities, Ha Long and Cam Pha. These are key specific activities of the Group's efforts to realize green growth goals.
Focus on key areas
Accordingly, from the end of 2020 to the beginning of 2021, TKV has approved five overall environmental protection plans, at: Ha Tu coal mine; Lang Khanh port; Bang Nau waste dump; coal processing plant and Cua Ong port; Km6 port.
The closed conveyor system for transporting coal and protecting the environment is deployed in many key areas
These are 5 key location, playing an important role in the production and business chain of TKV. At the same time, they are also areas prone to environmental hazards. Therefore, in the period of 2021-2025, these five locations will be implemented with total environmental protection solutions, including waste and wastewater management, environmental restoration and organization of more green spaces.
Mr. Do Ngoc Tu, Deputy Director of Hon Gai Coal Company, said that one of the key projects of the enterprise in the period of 2023-2025 is to develop a closed conveyor system to transport clean coal from Ha Tu mines, Beo Mountain to Lang Khanh port. The project has an estimated total investment of nearly 800 billion VND, with a conveyor length of nearly 9km.
According to Mr. Tu, when put into operation, this closed conveyor will be synchronously connected with the existing conveyor system to supply Quang Ninh Thermal Power. And so, the consumption of coal through the port will completely eliminate transportation by car, which has many potential risks to the environment and traffic.
Overall efforts
In addition to efforts in five key areas, TKV also implements longer-term solutions across coal mines. The most prominent of those is the Project of Urgent Protection of the Environment of the Coal Industry.

Coal mining with modern technology is a sustainable production strategy, minimizing negative impacts on the environment
According to the project, the subsidiaries of the Group have implemented many solutions to improve, restore and protect the environment around the mining and production areas in the period 2016-2020. A total of 75 projects and works of different scales have been implemented, nearly 600 hectares of land have been planted with improvement trees. The implementation areas are spread in Cam Pha, Ha Long, Uong Bi and Dong Trieu areas. At the same time, the Group coordinated with local authorities to relocate 398 households in 9 areas at risk of landslides and flooding due to impacts from mining and dumping activities. This activity is also part of the province's overall migration project.
From 2015 up to now, TKV has applied 10 mechanized synchronization lines at many units of Khe Cham, Ha Lam, Vang Danh... The labor productivity has increased by 2-5 times compared to before. Here, the average output of mechanized coal mining reaches 11-14% of the total coal production each year.
In open-pit mines, options to utilize mine waste as raw materials for other economic sectors are studied, promoting the implementation of the circular economy . Accordingly, Vinacomin units cooperated with local authorities in speeding up the progress of allocating waste rock to serve the site clearance of key projects. The use of mine waste soil for leveling will bring "dual benefits", both reducing the pressure of the landfill, and at the same time reducing the height, dust dispersion and anti-slippery for the current landfills.
At the same time, in general, TKV has been and continues to invest step by step in conveyor belts to transport coal to reduce production costs and ensure environmental factors. In the period 2015-2020, investment options for technological innovation towards mechanization, automation, computerization and synchronization of large-capacity equipment have contributed to reducing the rate of resource loss in mining. in underground mining from 23.5% to 20%, and in open pit mining from 4.9% to 4.3%. Labor productivity calculated by the average increasing value is 12%/year.
Those encouraging results have proved the right orientation of TKV. In the coming period, the Group determines to apply more strongly technology to manage improve overall production capacity in the direction of sustainable development of the mining industry, to meet green growth goals.
