Coal businesses have paid great attention to protecting the environment while boosting production. The Cua Ong Coal Sifting Company has seriously implemented its cleaner production strategy for seven years (2005-2011), significantly contributing to promoting the coal sector's sustainable development.

The Cua Ong Coal Sifting Company has seriously implemented its cleaner production strategy for seven years (2005-2011), significantly contributing to promoting the coal sector's sustainable development.
A member of the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin), the Cua Ong Coal Sifting Company produces more than 45 percent of the total volume of Vietnamese coal exports, meeting the growing demand on both domestic and foreign markets. Aware that coal production activities have an impact on the environment, along with efforts to expand production and increase the output, the company has paid special attention to protecting the environment. For the past many years, the company has strengthened its position in the field of production and trade and developed an environmentally friendly coal production model to promote sustainable development. Its investment in environmental protection and cleaner production increased year after year and reached over VND9.75 billion in 2011. The company has been dynamic in activities such as planting green trees, controlling pollution, collecting and controlling wastes, investing in the environmental management system, promoting propaganda and education. So far, it has planted 15,188 shade trees and 29,720 carpet trees for landscaping purposes. The company has also planted fruit-trees and bonsais around production facilities, using a spray-irrigation system to water the trees.
The Cua Ong Coal Sifting Company has invested in technological innovation to promote cleaner production. It has designed and manufactured new conveyor belts for coal sifting factories and devised a plan for producing 500,000 tonnes of 0-0.25mm coal dust from waste stone of coal sifting factories - these efforts allow the company to save materials and effectively utilize wastes during the production process.
Notably, the company has invested VND123 billion in a GAP project which allows it to gather several hundred thousand tonnes of peat each year and recover wastewater for use in cleaning coal, preventing it from running to Bai Tu Long Bay as it did in the past. In addition, the company has replaced the mud treatment system which consists of 12 sedimentation tanks with a hydraulic suspension system to produce 50mm coal pieces. The Ghesa sieving system has been replaced with a shaky sieving system to increase the rate of stone dust recovery. The company currently uses coal loading and piling machines manufactured in Germany. It has improved conveyor belts and storage facilities. As a result of these efforts, the company's production capacity has increased from nine million tonnes to 12-14 million tonnes each year.
The company has installed sewers to collect wastewater which runs mostly from its canteen. The wastewater is treated before it runs to the environment. The terraced wastewater treatment system was built with embankments to recover sediment and suspended solid wastes. This system is dredged every month and is capable of treating about 338cu.m or 90 percent of wastewater per day. Waste stone is fully recovered, 10 percent of which is reused to produce low-calorie coal and the remainder is collected and transported for use at the 10/10 Cam Pha Industrial Zone of Vinacomin. The Cua Ong Coal Sifting Company has received an ISO 14001:2004 certification for its participation in environmental protection activities, a certificate of merit and an award from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The achievements it has gained not only reflect the company's strong commitment to protect the environment but also bring considerable economic values.
