With the assistance of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Vietnam Cleaner Production Center, the Thai Nguyen Paper Mill for Export Joint Stock Company has become one of the typical companies of Thai Nguyen Province in taking part in the Component of Cleaner Production in Industry (the Component for Cleaner Production in Industry is a part of the Program of Development Cooperation in the Environment between the governments of Vietnam and Denmark for 2005-2010). Thanks to cleaner production methods, Thai Nguyen Paper has achieved many significant successes.
The Thai Nguyen Paper Mill for Export Joint Stock Company produces votive paper from bamboos and producing chopstick refuses. The company has three paper production lines with total capacity of 6,500 tonnes per year. All products are exported to Chinese Taipei.
Like other paper producers, the biggest environmental issue facing the company is waste water in the stages of soaking bamboos and cleaning machines and equipment. Waste water has black color, ugly smell and contains a large amount of fibers, pulp, oil and other inorganic compounds. Every year, the company eliminates 372,640cu.m of waste water which contains higher organic chemicals than the Vietnamese Standards TCVN5945-2005. Thus, the company was listed on the companies which cause serious environmental pollution. Therefore, its prestige was considerably influenced.
To overcome this situation, the company started to take part in the Component of Cleaner Production in Industry (CPI). Tran Duc Quyet, the company director, said: "Due to having small scale, the company decided to apply cleaner production methods in entire company and the methods which have no or small costs will be implemented first."
Specifically, before taking part in CPI, the company lost a large amount of materials. Thus, Thai Nguyen Paper applied some methods to reduce losing materials such as collecting spilled materials or buying high quality materials. Those methods which cost VND6.5 million helps the company save VND108.1 million annually thanks to reducing raw and damaged materials. In addition, because the soaking bamboo tank was broken, water was leaked out. The team which is responsible for implementing cleaner production methods repaired the tank. The remained soda used for soaking bamboos will be collected for using in the next time. In addition, communications activities were taken to raise workers' awareness. With just VND500,000, the company save VND10 million per years thanks to recycling soda. In addition, to save oil and sulfur, some methods such as adjusting the amount of oil and sulfur, maintain or replacing the faucets if necessary and reducing using sulfur resins were applied. This method do not cost any money, however, it helps the company save VND342 million annually thanks to reducing 47 tonnes of Fuel Oil,125.8 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide (CO2), 1.3 tonnes of Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) and 115kg of soot annually. In addition, to reduce energy consumption, the cleaner production team applied methods such as utilizing solar rays to light workshops, replacing old engines, regularly maintaining equipment and machines and using compact lamps instead of incandescent lamps. Those methods cost VND30 million, helping the company save VND156 million annually thanks to reducing electricity consumption.
Aware of significant successes when completing the first stage of the Component of Cleaner Production, the company started to invest in the second stage with methods which require larger capital. For example, to deal with fibers and pulp contained in waste water, the company decided to build two depositing tanks to collect pulp and recycle waste water. One year after, the company saved VND315.2 million from collecting 373 tonnes of pulp and utilizing 89,430cu.m of waste water.
In addition, the company applied the waste water coagulating technology to collect all pulp in waste water. This method cost VND701.8 million. Every year, the company saves VND477 million and reduces ugly smell of pulp disintegrated in waste water.
The company has four workshops. The workers had to work in a very hot atmosphere which contains a large amount of soot and chemicals. Thus, workers' health was seriously influenced. Thai Nguyen Paper installed blower systems and dust filters which cost VND978 million. The equipment helps the company reduce 52.23 tonnes of SO2, 5.19 tonnes of CO2 annually and workers' health and working capacity are remarkably improved.
In addition, the four old photocopiers had low quality and tore paper. Thus, the company purchased two new photocopiers which guarantees paper quality. Those photocopies reduce 80 percent of torn paper, equal to 4,658 tonnes of paper and VND708 million annually.
Assessing benefits of cleaner production, Quyet affirmed: "Cleaner production not only helps our company save energy and materials and promote production but also improves product quality and the company reputation."/.
