Cleaner Production Gets Best of Businesses

"Cleaner Production in Industry (CPI) not only protects the working environment but also significantly contributes to raising our revenue," said Nguyen Thi Lam Dong, the director of the Lam Dong Private Company when evaluating her company's achievements when taking part in the Component of Cleaner Production in Industry.

The Lam Dong Private Company produces raw coconut jelly with average production of 950 tonnes per year which brings VND1.3 billion in earnings.
In the early of 2008, with the support of Ben Tre Province's Department of Industry and Trade, the Lam Dong Private Company participated in the first stage of the Component of CPI (CPI is one of six components of the Vietnam-Denmark Development Cooperation in the Environment Program that is running from 2006-2010). During this period the company received technical support from Ho Chi Minh City's Cleaner Production Center to establish a cadre of cleaner production staff. The staff worked with experts to conduct research into real production situations and internal management and discussed solutions to improve production and internal management. By the end of 2008, 13 solutions including one related to internal management, two in financial management and ten in production procedures and equipment improvements were proposed.
The Lam Dong Private Company spent VND65 million on equipment improvements such as purchasing a new filter network, cleaning machines and equipment and adding new lightening and cooling systems. These solutions helped the company to save VND23 million per year.
At the end of 2008, the company started to implement the second stage of the Component of CPI. The Component of CPI supported the company with 50 percent of the capital to invest in an energy-saving boiler, improved infrastructure and the construction of an intensive waste water treatment system. It took them eight months to realize the projects which were capitalized at VND2.4 billion.
By July 2009, the company finished all the proposed cleaner production improvements. Evaluating the Component of CPI's impact on the company, Nguyen Thi Lam Dong said that the component helped them to protect the environment and increase productivity. Production expenditures have been considerably reduced with material costs cut by 4.2 percent, water and electricity consumption decreased by 12 percent and 18.8 percent respectively and cooling time reduced by 50 percent. Environmentally, waste water has decreased by 10.23 percent and fuel consumption has been significantly cut down. Exhaust fumes emitted during production have been collected and treated. The working environment has been improved, and the workforce have benefited from healthier working conditions.
According to Nguyen Thi Lam Dong, solutions for cleaner production are not complicated nor are they expensive. In reality, there are many cheap measures which produce amazing beneficial results. All enterprises, no matter their size, whether consuming high or low levels of energy can apply solutions for cleaner production. It is important that all production phases be controlled in order to introduce solutions to reoccurring problems. In addition, enterprises should focus on improving staff awareness of cleaner production because they play a crucial role in production and the can give practical and effective suggestions./.
