Granulated blast furnace slag S95 produced by Hoa Phat Group
Granulated blast furnace slag is a by-product of the steel making process using enclosed furnace. Being cooled very fast by high pressure water, blast furnace slag is a good active mineral admixture for cement and concrete and has been used for a long time in the world as well as in Vietnam. After being put into the granulating line, slag is granulated until its unit area is higher than 5,000 cm2/g and it is classified S95 in accordance with the national standard of TCVN 11586: 2016 and smoother than cement.
It was known that, in early 2018, Hoa Phat Group renovated the slag production system using high pressure cold water and invested in a blast furnace slag granulating line in steel production complex in Hai Duong province. This is a vertical and synchronous granulating line whose capacity is 115 tons per hour equivalent to 750,000 tons per year. When Hoa Phat Dung Quat Iron and Steel Production Complex will be completed operates at full capacity by 2020 and the total amount of blast furnace slag which is expected to be produced will be 2.6 million tons per year.

Hoa Phat Group's granulated blast furnace slag S95 has many outstanding advantages: it is used as a high active admixture for cement, concrete, mortar or agglutinative substance to reinforce weak ground. With S95, Vietnam can produce on the large scale cement, durable concrete used in the seawater, saltwater and brackish water to prevent chlorine and sulfate intrusion, meet the need to increase the longevity of buildings situated near the sea, on the island and on the seashore. By adding 30-50%, S95 can replace cement to produce low-heat concrete and high-grade concrete used in large concrete blocks with high compressive strength and waterproofing. Especially, by adding 30-50%, S95 can replace PC50 and PCB40 cement. As a result, this product helps reduce the price of ready mixed concrete as S95 is cheaper than cement.
Thanks to granulated blast furnace slag, Hoa Phat Group has become the first steelmaker in Vietnam to convert solid waste into high-value building materials. This also shows the determination of the company in optimizing technology, protecting the environment, bringing significant value added to its steel production chain.
